How to Take a Great Photo of Handwriting for Engraving

When someone we love has passed, even the way they signed their name can feel sacred. That familiar curve of their letters—the way they wrote “Love you” or signed a birthday card. It’s something we want to hold onto forever.

That’s why your photo matters.

Whether you’re ordering a memorial necklace, a keychain for your dad, or a bracelet for your sister, capturing your loved one’s handwriting clearly is the first step to making a piece that feels deeply personal and comforting.

So let’s make sure your photo turns out just right.

📝 Why It Matters

At Sarah & Essie, I carefully trace your loved one’s original handwriting by hand in most cases. I don’t use a font or try to recreate words that aren’t there—what you send me is what I engrave.

That means every word you want engraved must already appear in the handwriting sample you submit. (And yes, I can combine multiple samples as long as all the words are present.)

💡 Tips for a Great Handwriting Photo

1. Use natural lighting
Set the handwriting near a window during the day. Avoid flash, overhead lights, or dim rooms that cast shadows or yellow tones.

2. Take the photo straight-on
Hold your phone directly above the writing, not at an angle. If the photo is crooked or tilted, the handwriting can appear warped or distorted.

3. Keep it sharp and clear
Make sure it’s in focus! Blurry photos are hard to work with and may delay your order. Before uploading, zoom in and check that every letter is readable.

4. Submit actual handwriting
Every word you want engraved must appear in the sample. I lovingly trace what's already written—I can’t guess or recreate missing words in someone’s style.

5. Lined or colored paper? Totally fine.
Don’t worry if it’s on notebook paper or a birthday card. I can clean up most samples as long as the writing itself is clear.

✅ What a Good Photo Looks Like

  • Bright, even lighting
  • Writing centered in the frame
  • Taken straight-on
  • Clear and easy to read
  • No shadows or reflections

❌ What to Avoid

  • Dark or yellow lighting
  • Angled shots
  • Blurry or low-resolution photos
  • Shadows falling across the writing
  • Parts of the handwriting cropped out

💬 Still Not Sure?

Just do your best—really. Upload what you have and leave me a quick note during checkout. If anything is unclear, I’ll reach out before engraving. Promise.

You’re not alone in this.
